Judith Lowery, Head of Art at Chepstow Comprehensive, invited the 25 summer term leavers of Dell Primary, Chepstow’s feeder school, to spend a taster-day in the Art Department at Chepstow creating a mosaic mural on the topic of Gaudi. Susie Strange came in to help lead the project.
A drawing was created on a large board and divided into five panels. The pupils were then divided into five groups and each group given one of the panels. Twelve Year-10 fifteen year olds from Chepstow came to help. Equipped with goggles and gloves everyone had a go at breaking up the tiles and then set about gluing them to the templates. Susie showed how to look for and choose textures and colours to compliment the drawings and suggested the groups stand back from the picture now and again to get a new perspective.
Our photographs show the mosaics as the class worked on them and also, later on, how they looked when the panels were put together. Look for birds, flowers and insects. The glue was left to dry for a few days. The mural was then grouted and will be hung at Dell Primary at the beginning of the Autumn Term: photographs of completed piece to follow then.
